Chapter legal

Terms of Use

Effective August 5, 2026

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Sedlacek Solutions LLC (“Sedlacek Solutions,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) governing the Chapter mobile application, website, and related services (together, “Chapter”). By creating an account, selecting an acceptance control, or using Chapter, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Chapter.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Chapter. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, your parent or legal guardian must review and agree to these Terms and permit your use. You may not use Chapter if applicable law prohibits you from receiving the service.

Your account

Chapter uses Sign in with Apple. You are responsible for your device, Apple Account, Chapter account, and activity through them. Provide accurate information, keep access secure, and promptly notify us if you believe your account has been compromised. You may not sell, transfer, or share access to your Chapter account.

Your content and permission to operate Chapter

You retain ownership of the memories, answers, drafts, transcripts, stories, photos, edits, and other material you submit to Chapter (“Your Content”). You grant Sedlacek Solutions a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, process, adapt, transmit, and display Your Content only as needed to provide, secure, support, and improve Chapter, comply with your instructions, and satisfy legal duties. This license ends when Your Content is deleted, except for temporary backups, provider records, and information lawfully retained as described in the Privacy Policy.

You represent that you have the rights and permissions needed to submit Your Content and to let us process it. Personal stories may include other people. You are responsible for respecting their privacy, confidentiality, publicity, intellectual-property, and other rights, especially before you export or share a story.

AI-assisted features

After you grant permission, Chapter uses OpenAI to help produce interview questions, stories, summaries, metadata suggestions, revisions, and narration. AI-assisted output may be inaccurate, incomplete, offensive, or unsuitable and may not be unique to you. Review and edit all output before relying on or sharing it. You remain responsible for Your Content, your instructions, and how you use the output.

Chapter is a storytelling service, not a medical, mental-health, legal, financial, genealogical, historical-verification, or other professional service. Do not rely on generated content as professional advice or as a verified record of fact. You may withdraw AI-processing permission in Settings, which prevents future AI-backed requests without deleting existing saved content.

Private accounts and sharing

Chapter does not publish user stories or create a public user profile. Ebook exports are generated on your device. If you export or share content, the recipient and destination's rules and privacy practices apply, and Sedlacek Solutions cannot control further use after sharing.

Subscriptions, billing, and cancellation

Chapter may offer auto-renewable subscriptions. Available plans, prices, trial or introductory terms, billing periods, and included features are shown before purchase. Purchases are processed by Apple and subscription status is managed with RevenueCat. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.

A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Apple may charge your account within 24 hours before renewal. Manage or cancel in App Store subscription settings. Refunds and billing disputes are handled by Apple under its rules. Removing the app, deleting Chapter data, or deleting your Chapter account does not cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel it separately with Apple. If paid access ends, subscription features may become unavailable, but your rights under applicable consumer law remain unchanged.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Chapter or its output for unlawful, fraudulent, or harmful activity.
  • Submit content that infringes rights, violates privacy, is defamatory, exploits children, or contains unlawful threats or abuse.
  • Attempt unauthorized access, interfere with security or operation, introduce malicious code, or evade limits or subscription controls.
  • Scrape, crawl, probe, benchmark, reverse engineer, copy, resell, or use automated means against Chapter except where law expressly permits it.
  • Misrepresent AI-generated content as verified fact or impersonate another person without authorization.

We may investigate suspected misuse and restrict or terminate access when reasonably necessary to protect users, providers, Sedlacek Solutions, or the public, or to comply with law.

Chapter intellectual property

Chapter, including its software, design, brand, text, artwork, and other materials excluding Your Content, is owned by Sedlacek Solutions or its licensors and protected by law. Subject to these Terms and Apple's applicable license, we grant you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use Chapter for its intended purpose. No other rights are granted.

Feedback

If you voluntarily send suggestions or product feedback, you grant us a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free right to use it without restriction or compensation. This does not give us ownership of the private stories or personal information contained in a support request, which remain governed by the Privacy Policy.

Third-party services

Chapter depends on services provided by Apple, OpenAI, DigitalOcean, RevenueCat, TelemetryDeck, and website infrastructure providers. Their terms and policies may also apply to their services. We are not responsible for third-party services outside our control, but we remain responsible for our own obligations under applicable law.

Changes, availability, and termination

We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue features and may update these Terms. We will provide notice of material changes when required. Continued use after updated Terms take effect means you accept them where permitted by law. Chapter may occasionally be unavailable, and features may vary by device, operating system, language, region, subscription, or provider availability.

You may stop using Chapter at any time and may delete your data or account in Settings. We may suspend or terminate access for a material violation of these Terms, security risk, legal requirement, nonpayment, or discontinuance of Chapter. Account deletion is permanent and saved content may not be recoverable. Terms that by their nature should survive—including ownership, disclaimers, liability limits, and dispute provisions—remain effective.

Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Chapter is provided “as is” and “as available.” Sedlacek Solutions disclaims implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, accuracy, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not warrant that content will be preserved forever or that generated output will be accurate. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain disclaimers, so they apply only to the extent permitted.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Sedlacek Solutions and its officers, members, employees, contractors, and licensors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, goodwill, data, or opportunities, arising from Chapter. Our total liability for claims relating to Chapter will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid for Chapter during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or US $100.

These limits do not exclude liability that cannot legally be limited, including any non-waivable consumer rights. Nothing in these Terms limits remedies available under mandatory law where you live.

Apple terms

For an app obtained through Apple, Apple's Standard End User License Agreement governs the app license unless Apple or Sedlacek Solutions presents a different applicable license. Apple is not responsible for providing Chapter support, and Apple is a third-party beneficiary of the applicable app-license terms where required.

Governing law and courts

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Unless mandatory consumer law gives you the right to proceed elsewhere, disputes must be brought in a state or federal court with jurisdiction in Florida, and each party consents to those courts. These Terms do not require arbitration and do not waive participation in a class action where one is otherwise available.

General terms

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement concerning Chapter except for terms presented for a particular purchase or feature. If a provision is unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the rest will remain effective. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them as part of a reorganization or transfer of Chapter, subject to applicable law.
